A.S.James Pty Ltd, Geotechnical Engineers have been carrying out geotechnical investigations for a wide range of commercial, industrial, residential, civic and developmental projects since 1963 and has always been completely independent of any consulting or contracting organisation.  We are a Victorian based company, capable of carrying out all types of geotechnical investigations.

A.S.James are fully self-contained, incorporating engineering staff, two NATA accredited laboratories and field equipment, including drilling rigs, field density nuclear meters and similar.  As such, we are fully flexible in our approach to any investigation.

Four truck mounted, one trailer mounted and one Dingo Drilling Rig equipped with facilities for NMLC Diamond Core Drilling, Wash Boring and Continuous Flight Auguring.  Field test facilities include Standard Penetration, Composite Tube Sampling, In-situ Vane Shear Strength, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, Benkelman Beam and In-situ Density Determination using Nuclear Density/Moisture Gauge.

A.S.James are retained by a number of the leading home builders to classify all house sites in relation to relevant regulations.  We also provide our service to many small, medium and large independent/private builders, sole traders and/or homeowners.  Large projects include Harcrest (Stud Road), Ascotchase (Ascot Vale) and Gen Fyansford (Fyansford).

Slope Control

Soil Nailing (Cabrini Hospital); Slope stability projects in Frankston, Sherbrooke, Portsea, Otways and Flinders.  Slope stability and risk assessment for local councils such as the Shire of Yarra Ranges (SOYR), Moreland City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire where a Schedule to Erosion Management Overlay (EMO) exists.  We also carried out detailed risk assessments for the open excavation at Mona, Hobart.

Compaction Control

Earthworks testing and control by various methods including nuclear density gauge.  Quality Assurance testing on numerous VicRoads, Melbourne Water and Department of Road Transport (SA) projects including Calder Freeway, Black Forest, Kyneton Bypass and Diggers Rest Bypass, Western Freeway, Ballarat Bypass, Princes Freeway, Traralgon Bypass, Melbourne Water Werribee Treatment Lagoons, Sturt Highway, Mildura to Renmark and Burra to Morgan Roads, S.A.  Also, numerous large scale industrial, commercial and environmental developments, including ADI Footscray, Visyboard Coolaroo, Castlemaine, Melton and Smythesdale Landfills.We have also been involved in Commercial Estates by Goodman, CIP, Vaughan Constructions and SCT.

Slope Stability Analysis and Landslide Risk Assessment

We have been involved in many Slope Stability projects in the Otway Ranges, Dandenong Ranges, Mornington Peninsula Shire and within other local councils.  We have provided analytical techniques and solutions to a number of prominent residential developments in areas prone to slope instability.  The slope stability is assessed using SLOPE/W software and risk assessments are carried out in accordance with Australian Geo Mechanics Society (AGS) Guidelines 2007.

After graduating, Tim’s career commenced with two years spent in a structural engineering office designing steel and concrete structures.  Within that office, he established a small geotechnical arm in 1979-1980.  This small business was bought by A.S.James Pty Ltd soon after.  Through progressive achievement from this point Tim, furthered himself to finally become Managing Director of A.S.James in 1992.  Tim is a member of Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust), College of Civil Engineers, NATA Signatory, Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) and Australian Drilling Industry Association (ADIA).  Tim’s areas of expertise are Foundation Design (Footings, Rafts and Piles), Pavement Design and Assessment, Slope Stability (particularly in Marine Applications), Civil Earthworks including pavements, embankments, structures and subdivisions and Performance of Light Building Structures.  He is also an experienced Consultant on Geotechnical issues in WorkCover investigations.


Daniel is recognised as a Chartered Professional Engineer by Engineers Australia and is on the National Engineering Register.  He has completed Diplomas in Resource Management, Engineering Technology and Project Management. Commencing his working life with Thiess Services, Daniel previously trained as a Hydrographer for 7 years.

Since joining A.S.James Pty Ltd in February 2004, he has become the Laboratory Manager of our NATA accredited Ballarat Laboratory.  Daniel has been involved in a wide range of engineering projects across Regional Victoria, South Australia and Melbourne, programming and supervising Geotechnical Investigations and designing foundations for commercial, industrial and residential developments.

BSc (Hons). Geology (RPGeo 10184)

On graduating from Victorian University of Wellington, New Zealand, Graeme worked as a Geologist/Environmental Consultant in Melbourne, from 2001-2007. Since joining A.S.James Pty Ltd in April 2007, he has been involved in engineering projects designing foundations for commercial/industrial/residential developments.

He has also applied other Geotechnical Engineering applications such as slope stability analysis and land slide risk assessment.  In particular, this work has been carried out within local councils such as the Shire of Yarra Ranges (SOYR), Moreland City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire where a Schedule to Erosion Management Overlay (EMO) exists in areas prone to slope instabilities.  Graeme is a member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and is a Registered Professional Geoscientist (RPGeo) in the field of Geotechnical Engineering.

Shyamalee Herath received a Masters Degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2000 and Professional Masters Degree in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation from ITC, Netherlands in 2001.  Shyamalee worked as a Geotechnical Engineer in National Building Research Organisation Sri Lanka since 1994 to 2005.  Since joining A.SJames Pty Ltd in September 2005, she has been involved in designing of foundations for commercial and residential developments, pavement designs and slope stability assessment and landslide risk assessment.

Shyamalee is a Chartered member of the Engineers Australia, Engineers Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society.

BEng Civil (Hons) MIEAust CPEng NER PE0008256

Paddy is a member of Engineers Australia and prior to A.S.James, he gained experience in structural engineering while completing his Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Monash University, designing small scale structural elements for a variety of projects ranging from bus shelters to fencing for sports facilities.  Paddy joined A.S.James in 2015, working in the laboratory and offsiding for drillers.

Upon graduating in 2017, Paddy applied his hands on experience to manage a wide range of geotechnical engineering projects for residential, commercial and industrial developments including flexible pavement designs, foundation designs, slope stability assessments and ANCOLD assessments.


Hoan is a member of Engineers Australia.  Hoan worked for over a decade in an architectural curtain wall/facade (predominantly for high rise) firm before he completed his civil engineering degree at Swinburne University of Technology in 2011.

Since joining A.S.James Pty Ltd in January 2012, he has been involved in engineering projects designing foundations for commercial/industrial/residential developments and flexible pavements for both local council and state roads.  He has also applied other Geotechnical Engineering applications such as slope stability analysis and land slide risk assessment.

BEng Civil

Amir is a member of Engineers Australia and prior to A.S.James, he gained experience in research while completing his Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Swinburne University, researching the suitability of tyre-derived aggregates (TDA).  He completed his civil engineering degree at the Swinburne University of Technology in 2019.

Since joining A.S.James Pty Ltd in 2019, he has been involved in managing engineering projects for commercial, industrial, and residential developments, including flexible pavement designs, foundation designs, slope stability assessments and landslide risk assessments.

BEng Civil (Hons)

Furkan is a member of Engineers Australia and received a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey in 2016.  After graduating he gained 3 years of geotechnical experience working overseas, he has developed a strong foundation in the field on a variety of projects.  He has particular proficiency in geotechnical numerical modelling in earth retaining systems and ground improvement in applications like deep excavations, foundations, landslides, road, and railway projects.

While receiving an MBA degree in Victoria, he transitioned his career focus to structural engineering with a specialization in residential design.  After working 3 years in structural engineering, Furkan has recently returned to his roots in geotechnical engineering and joined A.S.James Pty Ltd at the beginning of 2023.
