Earthworks Services
A.S.James offer numerous earthworks services including supervision of initial excavation, site preparation, and ensuring adequate site preparation is achieved for all types of constructions projects.
Any earthworks projects will always have engineering specifications to meet and one of the primary specifications is how compact the soil (fill) is.
A.S.James can determine the “relative compaction,” or “percent compaction” of materials, to confirm that they meet project requirements for quality assurance purposes. In addition to compaction control, our technicians can also carry out the following field tests including dynamic cone penetrometer, Benkelman Beam and in-situ density determination using nuclear density/moisture gauge.
A.S.James have completed quality assurance testing for VicRoads, Melbourne Water and Department of Road Transport (SA) projects including Calder Freeway, Black Forest, Kyneton Bypass and Diggers Rest Bypass, Western Freeway, Ballarat Bypass, Princes Freeway, Traralgon Bypass, Melbourne Water Werribee Treatment Lagoons, Sturt Highway, Mildura to Renmark and Burra to Morgan Roads, SA. Also, numerous large scale industrial, commercial and environmental developments, including ADI Footscray, Visy Coolaroo, Castlemaine, Melton and Smythesdale Landfills.
Our supervision can be tailored to meet the demands of the project whether full-time supervision (Level 1) or part-time supervision (Level 2) is required. This involves inspecting soils as well as in-situ density determination using nuclear density/moisture gauge.
Level 1 Supervision and Testing
In accordance with AS 3798, The GITA provided by A.S.James is responsible for ensuring that the materials, inspections, and testing are adequate for its intended purpose and meeting design specification requirements. Full-time supervision is required onsite during some bulk earthworks operations.
Level 2 Testing
In accordance with AS 3798, A geotechnical testing authority (GTA) will be appointed to carry out sampling and testing as required or specified. The GTA is responsible for selecting the location of sampling and testing operations within each visit made to the site.

Daniel became a Director of A.S.James Pty Ltd in 2020 and is a Chartered Professional Engineer recognised by Engineers Australia, as well as a member of the National Engineering Register. He holds Diplomas in Resource Management, Engineering Technology and Project Management.
Daniel commenced his career with Thiess Services, where he trained and worked as a Hydrographer for seven years. Since joining A.S.James in February 2004, he has progressed through the organisation to become Laboratory Manager of the company’s NATA-accredited Ballarat laboratory and, subsequently, a Director.
Throughout his career, Daniel has played a key role in delivering a broad range of engineering projects across Regional Victoria, South Australia and metropolitan Melbourne. His experience includes the programming and supervision of geotechnical investigations, along with the design of foundations for commercial, industrial and residential developments.

He has an excellent understanding of all testing completed in our laboratories. Tom has completed a Diploma in Laboratory Techniques and is recognised as Level 5 by NATA.

With extensive knowledge of our laboratory testing procedures, Stephen oversees all laboratory matters across both A.S.James facilities. He holds a Diploma in Laboratory Techniques and is recognized as a Level 5 NATA assessor.
