Investigations

The goal of the project was to assess the subsurface conditions at 10–18 Chifley Drive, Preston, to support the safe and efficient development of a new bus depot.  A.S.James was engaged to characterise ground conditions, identify risks associated with historic quarrying and uncontrolled fill and provide geotechnical advice for foundations and pavements.  Services included drilling 19 boreholes, excavating 7 test pits, undertaking in-situ and laboratory testing, and completing diamond core drilling.  A.S.James also supervised excavation works removing up to 8 metres of uncontrolled fill, re-exposed basalt quarry walls, oversaw controlled earthworks and backfilling to achieve design levels.

A.S.James completed a comprehensive Geotechnical and Environmental Investigation to support the upgrade works at the Ballarat Major Events Precinct, delivered as part of the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program. The project includes the installation of 5,000 new permanent seats at Mars Stadium (Eureka Stadium), increasing the total seated capacity to 10,000, along with the construction of a new amenities and seating stand and the development of the Ballarat Regional Athletics Centre, featuring a new athletics track and pavilion facilities. These upgrades enhance Ballarat’s capability to host major sporting and entertainment events, while improving the long-term performance and safety of the precinct’s infrastructure. A.S.James’ investigations played a key role in informing design, foundation performance and ground management for this significant regional infrastructure upgrade.

Roberts Co (Vic) Pty Ltd, a prominent construction firm, has entrusted A.S.James with a crucial geotechnical investigation task. This project is integral to their plans for Project Moon in Craigieburn, requiring meticulous examination of the building pad’s integrity, including subgrade conditions, potential settlements, and surface movements. The comprehensive report generated will not only outline these findings but also offer invaluable recommendations regarding design parameters for floor slabs and pavements, ensuring the project’s structural integrity and longevity.

A.S.James required to forecast geotechnical investigations for a proposed warehouse development. Geotechnical investigation goals consist of reviewing foundation conditions, geological maps, aerial photographs and site preparation background. Establish the subsurface profile, including groundwater condition from boreholes and site preparation involving filling works. Provide recommendations for footing arrangements, minimum founding depths and allowable bearing pressure, appropriate retention systems, lateral earth pressures, design parameters for associated floor slabs and pavement design, as well as excavation conditions and site dewatering advice.

The purpose for carrying out the geotechnical investigation was for the proposed development of a new stadium grandstand and external pavements at Eureka Stadium, Ballarat. A.S.James project goals were required to forecast foundation conditions and recommend design parameters. Our field methods involved auger drilling, standard penetration testing, in-situ vane shear strength testing and logging of soil profiles. Field testing, laboratory testing, recommendations for proposed structure, pavement construction and site earthworks, as well as construction and maintenance of footing systems were also provided.

A.S.James geotechnical investigation commissioned for a proposed warehouse development and extension of existing court. Requirement to forecast foundation and subgrade conditions and recommend design parameters for both the proposed structures and associated pavements and floor slabs. Goal to establish subsurface profile and groundwater condition from boreholes. Provide recommendations for footing arrangement, minimum founding depths and bearing pressure for footing arrangements, retention systems and lateral earth pressures. Provide advice to anticipated excavation conditions and onsite dewatering.

A.S.James geotechnical investigation required to forecast foundation conditions and recommend design parameters for a multipurpose centre at St Patricks College. Goals outlined are to establish the subsurface profile, including borehole groundwater conditions and site preparation involving filling works. Footing recommendations, including a site factor for earthquake loading. Provide minimum founding depths and allowable bearing pressures for the footing arrangements, together with predictions of short and long-term settlements. Further retention systems recommendations for the basement walls, together with relevant lateral earth pressures. Excavation condition advice, including on-site dewatering and provide design parameters for pavement design.

Since previous A.S.James geotechnical investigations, additional boreholes were drilled and our engineering team were again commissioned to forecast foundation conditions and recommend foundation design parameters regarding a proposed football centre for the Matildas. Goals were to define the depth of the underlying basalt rock and establish the subsurface profile, including groundwater conditions from drilled boreholes. Also provided were appropriate footing arrangement recommendations, hazard factor for earthquake loading in accordance with AS 1170.4 (2007), minimum founding depths and allowable bearing pressures.

A.S.James has been dedicated to serving Ivanhoe Grammar School since 1996, showcasing a longstanding commitment to delivering exceptional service. Recently, we undertook a comprehensive drilling investigation to offer crucial geotechnical and contamination advice for a substantial 19-meter deep basement excavation. This project was pivotal in ensuring the successful completion of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s state-of-the-art facility. The completed facility boasts innovative features, including a rooftop synthetic sports fields, two subsurface levels of basketball courts and a 50 metre swimming pool.

A wind farm construction comprising of over 90 wind turbines, associated hardstands and access roads was proposed. A.S.James understand each wind turbine is to be supported by a gravity footing or a rock anchored footing founded on rock, and were required to forecast foundation conditions, recommend design parameters for structures and pavements. Geotechnical investigation goals were to establish the subsurface soil/rock profile including ground water conditions in boreholes. Recommendations footing, founding depths and bearing pressures for footing arrangements, together with predictions of settlements, and parameters for the design of rock anchors were provide. Areas of slope instability in the vicinity (within 50 metres radius) of each wind turbine site and advice on flexible/rigid pavement design for associated roads and hardstands proposed were identified.

Geotechnical investigation required to forecast foundation conditions and recommend design parameters for a proposed upgrade of the existing South Melbourne Football Club, Lakeside Oval, State Sports Facility. A.S.James’ goals were to establish the soil and rock profile, including ground water conditions within 11 boreholes. To provide recommendations for footing arrangements for the proposed development, minimum founding depths and allowable bearing pressures for the recommended footing arrangements, together with predictions of short and long-term settlements. To provide advice for anticipated excavation conditions, on site rock excavation and dewatering.
